I love finding basic pieces in my wardrobe and creating whole looks around them. My first post was on the basic white button down (found here). Now let’s visit the striped tee. When it comes to my closet, there is no shortage of these and they even have their own category. It can be worn casually or “dolled up” for the office or a night out. Many people are afraid to wear horizontal stripes but here are some helpful tips. The larger the width of the stripe, the more slimming it is. If you have a larger chest, wear one with a lower cut neckline. That’s just a basic rule across the board to follow. If you find a striped tee with side panels like this, it creates an optical illusion giving you a smaller waistline. This basic can take a backseat in your ensemble or it can be the star performer. It’s the perfect piece for mixing, matching and layering. I think we’ll revisit stripes next week and highlight ways to mix patterns with it. Pattern mixing is one of my favorites! But for now, enjoy this anything but basic post.
Overalls like these are a fun piece that can go from Old Macdonald to OMG. Add a cross body bag and hat like this to success-orize this look. Pair your tee with a pleated mini similar to this one and leggings or tights to keep those legs warm on colder days. Add boots or a heeled mary jane like these to finish your look.
Elevate a casual striped tee with this blazer and roll the sleeves up exposing this tee like this first look I posted last week on casualizing velvet. Dress up that tee with a sequin skirt like this one (on sale right now) and it’s the perfect way to show off a strappy pair of heels like these for a night out.
Layer a long vest in olive over your tee and denim for a more put together look than just a simple tee and jeans. You can be an overachiever and add heels like this first lady or booties and sandals are perfectly acceptable too. Bonus: if you’re nursing and need a cover, it plays double duty. I also love the idea of pairing a simple, striped tee with a skirt (similar here) and a cone-heeled sandal like these. I have these shoes and can vouch that they’re actually very comfy! The tea length skirt is a great option because it’s long enough to bend over and pick up those babies without showing the world where they came from!
Pair your striped tee with velvet flared leg pants like these. Finish your look with a military inspired trench coat (similar here) and over-sized bag like this one. Nothing is more put-together than a crisp, white pair of wide leg pants like these. Add a blazer in a pop of color and heels for business meetings.
Layer a short-sleeved sweater or poncho similar to this one over your striped tee and pair with these booties and a tassel necklace for a relaxed but “going somewhere” look. Pair your tee with a wide leg pant similar to these for a instant elevated look. Wear with heels or flats. Just make sure your pants aren’t dragging the floor.
Stripes are a basic so when it comes to the Wild Card anything goes! They’re considered a neutral and a great way to show off another piece in your wardrobe. Try it with a uniquely cut skirt (similar here). Layer it under a funnel neck sweater like this one and pair with distressed denim and and an unexpected velvet heel like these. Show off a fun fur like this one. Try them with a vegan leather pant similar to these. Style your tee with a sequin blazer and camo pants (similar here) like Jenna Lyons in the last pic. Because of their versatility, stripes are perfect for pattern play but that’s for next week!
I hope you found a way to style your striped tee you never have before! Let me know what you learned or thought in the comments and as usual I’d always love to see a pic of you in your striped tee!
